ZHS student Joseph Howard is one of four area high school juniors to win an all-expense paid trip to WASHINGTON, D.C.! The 2017 Electric Cooperative Youth Tour Essay Contest, sponsored by DEMCO, marks the 40th anniversary of this annual event that was pioneered in the late 1970s in an effort to provide outstanding youth with an insight into how their national government operates. DEMCO receives hundreds of essays from area high schools, and a panel of judges select 12 finalists. In addition to completing a short written test on their knowledge of DEMCO and rural electrification, each finalist must present his or her essay during a banquet held at White Oak Plantation. Based upon scores earned in the final round of oral presentation, four students are selected to travel to Washington, D. C. in June of this year, along with over two dozen students from other statewide electric cooperatives. While in Washington, the Louisiana Youth Tour
delegation joins approximately 1,500 other Youth Tour participants from 43 different states and visits the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Supreme Court, National Archives, Arlington Cemetery, and many other historic buildings and landmarks.
